Robinson Film Center finally open for business

Shreveport will have a new theater and cultural center on its hands: here comes the Robinson Film Center.

About a decade ago, some cinephiles got together. Their wish was to start a film festival that was Shreveport's own. The project quickly exploded and everyone decided: we need a different theater in Shreveport, one we can call our own.

You remember those senior superlatives from high school - "best dressed," "most athletic," "most school spirit." Well, those are alright (if not one final popularity contest at school), but The Conglomerate asked for students to take a more irreverent approach - with great success! Students nominated nearly 70 members of the class of 2008 for all kinds of entertaining (and probably apt) superlatives, which are found on the following two pages.

To begin I would like to take the time to thank Dr. Lefevers for her 30 years of service and her contribution to the Centenary community. She will be greatly missed and we hope she enjoys her retirement.

As a Health and Exercise Science major, I would like to inform the Centenary community and current Health and Exercise Science Students of the status of our program. With the loss of Dr. Lefevers, the program is limited to 1.5 professors: Dr. Armstrong and Dr. Henderson (Dr. Henderson is considered a half professor because he is spilt with Biology).

While I certainly understand how off-putting 'ridiculous international politics' can be, as long as no one is gravely injured and we're within the bounds of tact, I'm all for protests. Freedom of speech, expression, all that good stuff - let me make it clear that while I do not support the loons who have tried to physically stop torch-runners, I certainly would be out in the streets with other demonstrators should the Olympic flame ever pass through a city as inauspicious as Shreveport.

Having reported on this story, I have to say that I don't understand it at all.

I mean, come on people, it's the Olympics, not professional wrestling. Bringing fire extinguishers to try and put out the symbol of the world's ability to come together in the spirit of unity and transcend petty politics - somehow, in my mind at least, rioting along the parade route and trying to tackle the athletes carrying the torch just doesn't cut it.

Two simple words have defined the past few weeks at Centenary for me: it's over. On May 10 at around 10 a.m., I will walk onto a stage and receive a piece of paper from the President of the college. It will have my name on it and it will say I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Centenary College of Louisiana.

It all started on August 25, 2004, when most of the class of 2008 moved into the residence halls of Centenary College. Despite the many rumors on campus, Centenary financial records show proper money management concerning the school's debt. The administrators effectively allocate funds toward paying off the debt, though they still adopt the attitude of "do more with less." The most recent debt comes from bonds purchased to finance the renovations of Rotary Hall and the Fitness Center in 2000.

Thirty invited students, faculty, and staff gathered last Saturday for the Centenary "Welcoming Diversity/Prejudice Reduction" workshop.

The workshop was a way of making key individuals aware of biases, prejudices, and stereotypes in the world, and the design of the workshop also caused them to face their own issues.

Marjorie Lyons Playhouse had a full house last Saturday and Sunday as students, alumni, parents, and the community came out to see the 2008 Escaped Images Dance Concert. Who wouldn't want to miss this, with it being Ginger Folmer's last concert as Centenary? (Still, I'm sure she will be back many more times - after 32 years here, I think it would be hard for her to keep away and too many people would miss her terribly.

Gold Dome renovations to take place this summer

Renovations to the Gold Dome will start this summer thanks to a generous donation by a Booster Club member. The renovations will begin on both of the long rows of bleachers on either side of the court, below the aluminum railing.

The now wooden benches will be replaced in the middle with plastic seat back chairs, with the very ends being replaced with a newer set of bleachers.

Softball fans, welcome back once again. What a weekan exciting one at that. We hosted our last conference home series and came away with some huge and memorable wins.

Heading into early last week, a sense of fatigue seemed to pester our team. The ideas of finals approaching, papers and presentations nearing, and conference tournament on the line filtered in and out of our minds as if being a student-athlete was a tough job (haha).
